Cyanoskin is a living paint designed to absorb pollution, through utilising untapped building surfaces in mid and high-rise cityscapes. Once applied, the photosynthetic paint grows and thickens, allowing it to capture carbon dioxide in urban environments. Cyanoskin is the first of its kind, offering large-scale practical, affordable carbon capture through revolutionary photosynthetic paint.

Cyanoskin offers a cost-effective solution to bridge the gap between expensive living walls and traditional paint. Our solution is drastically cheaper, being price-comparable to existing eco-paints compared to £200-£500/m2 for living walls. With our affordable and effective approach, Cyanoskin helps us meet our net zero targets and stay on track with our Carbon budget.

The Future is Green

The Future
By 2050, over 68% of the world's population will live in urban areas, leading to increased pollution and carbon emissions. Our goal is to utilise the ever-expanding surface area of cities and transform them into the lungs of the earth. Our vision is to create sustainable and liveable cities that are resilient to the impacts of climate change. To achieve this, we aim to help businesses reduce their carbon emissions at low cost and future-proof their operations to comply with novel green legislation. By these efforts, we can make a positive impact on the health of future cities and create sustainable living environments for generations to come.
Context
The Cyanoskin team is an all-female interdisciplinary team collaboration between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London made up of a business student Antionette Nothomb, a designer Emma Money and a biologist Holly Souza-Newman ( Global innovation Design MA/Msc). We met at Imperial College London's climate entrepreneur club with a shared vision of creating greener cities. We began discussing algae, after a previous project’s research revealed the extraordinary potential for carbon capture. With this in mind, we began brainstorming the best way to utilise this untapped potential, looking to nature for its proven methods, and settled on a biomimetic paint.

Our Goal
On the world's current trajectory we are unable to meet our net zero targets. Cyanoskin provides an affordable effective solution to get us back on track to meet our Carbon budget. It represents a step toward a more sustainable approach to our relationship with the planet. By utilising renewable resources and aiming to reduce carbon emissions, it aligns with SustainableDevelopment Goal (SDG) 13, which focuses on combating climate change. It also supports SDG Goal 11, which emphasises creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and settlements.Cyanoskin not only addresses the climate crisis by reducing pollution but also helps reconnect people with nature, fostering more positive mental health and well-being and a stronger connection to the environment.

FIND ANSWERS TO YOUR

QUESTIONS

01
DOES IT ONLY COME IN GREEN?

No. We strongly believe in the biophilic benefits (reduced stress, improved positive mental health and disease prevention) of greener and more natural surroundings. However, algae comes in many natural shades and as the company progresses we intend on expanding our range to encompass a whole spectrum of colours to suit the clients wishes.

02
DOES IT SMELL?

No, it’s ingredients are all natural and a part of nature’s odourless creations. Imagine you are in a forest with algae coated trees or by the side of a fresh river, does that smell?

03
HOW MANY LAYERS?

Like most paints, ours requires two coats to provide perfect coverage.

04
WILL IT DIE?

The paint is self-sufficient and our secret formula contains the boost of nutrients it requires to get growing, and the rest are commonly found in the air.
